The kaftan pattern was developed based on historical reconstruction. During the design process, we paid particular attention to the careful interpretation of historical motifs, elaborate machine embroidery, and meticulously crafted details. Creating a single kaftan or robe requires more than 20 hours of work, preceded by extensive historical research. The intricate machine embroidery can consist of up to 600,000 stitches. Each piece represents a contemporary reinterpretation of historical heritage.
The linen fabric is produced in Hungary, where both the knitting and dyeing processes take place. This is made possible through our partnership with the last remaining domestic factory of its kind, helping to preserve and carry forward Hungary’s textile manufacturing traditions.
About the Motif:
The so-called octopus motif may have played an important role in the formation of certain rose designs found in Hungarian decorative art. According to one historical interpretation, the petals of these roses were partly formed from heart-shaped elements resembling the body or arms of an octopus, a design associated with the artistic traditions of our Hungarian Conquest-period ancestors. Symbolically, this motif has been interpreted as an expression of divine creative and perfecting power.
When exploring the possible origins of the rose formed from octopus-like elements, the decorative clasp, or boglár, of the traditional Hungarian mente (a ceremonial outer garment) is also worth considering. The mente fastening was a garment accessory consisting of four straps that met at a central clasp on the chest.
The fastening may originally have been worn as an independent ornament, even without the mente itself. Of its four straps, two passed beneath the arms and two ran over the shoulders towards the back. The two front shoulder straps supported the corresponding sides of the garment’s collar, while the straps passing beneath the arms helped keep the mente securely in place and prevented it from slipping towards the neck as the wearer rode at speed.
This arrangement helped distribute the weight of the garment and allowed the straps extending from the centre of the chest to hold it securely, even while riding.
According to this historical interpretation, certain variations of the Hungarian rose motif may preserve the tradition of chest clasps decorated with octopus-like forms, positioned where the four straps met.
The Szervető Hungarian Conquest Period Rose motif draws inspiration from this rich historical and artistic heritage, connecting the world of archaeological finds with contemporary clothing design.
